There are some great day trips from Marrakech that are worth doing if you have time while you are visiting Morocco.

Just outside of Marrakech is the Ourika Valley. The area’s greenery provides a stark contrast to the dry land around the city. Its water source is from the Atlas Mountains, which tower above the valley and provide stunning backdrops to the landscapes and waterfalls in the area.

The Ourika Valley is an easy day trip from Marrakech. You can get there by hiring a car or taking a tour. There are large bus tours, private tours, and van tours of the Ourika Valley, so you have plenty of options.

Another good day trip is to the Palmeraie. The area surrounds the city, and is home to some of the top resorts and hotels in Marrakech. You can go for lunch at the famous Amanjena hotel and walk around the pretty grounds, or just take a drive and explore.

For trips further afield, consider taking a day trip to Essaouira. At just 2.5 hours from Marrakech by bus, Essaouira is a great way to escape the heat of the city and get some fresh coastal air by the ocean.

Closer in to Marrakech are the stunning Atlas Mountains. No trip to the city is complete without a visit to the peaks. It is difficult to do a day trip from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains, but if you can go on an overnight trip or multi-day excursion, it is highly recommended.

Many visitors to Morocco take trips from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains.

Given the proximity of the mountains to the city, it is an easy trip and makes for a great escape from the bustle of the souks and the medina.

There are several ways to take trips from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains. These include hiring a car in Marrakech and driving to the Atlas Mountains, taking an organized tour to the mountains, or going on a small group excursion.

Whatever method you choose to get to the mountains, it is best to stay overnight for at least one night.

The distance from the city center is far enough that doing a day trip from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains is very ambitious, but doing an overnight or several night trip is well worth it.

Mandarin Oriental Jnan Rahma was slated to be one of the best luxury hotels in Marrakech. Set to open in the first quarter of 2011, the Mandarin Oriental in Marrakech was going to be a palatial hotel set against the stunning backdrop of the Atlas Mountains.

All of the rooms were going to be decorated in Oriental themes and come with top luxury ammenities.

The Mandarin Oriental Jnan Rahma would have also featured an ottoman spa and hammam, swimming pools, and several restaurants and bars.

Buses from Marrakech to Other Cities in Morocco

There are three types of bus companies that run buses from Marrakech to other cities in Morocco: Supra Tours, CTM, and private bus companies.

Supra Tours Bus Company in Marrakech

Supra Tours buses are owned by the state train company, ONCF. Supra Tours runs daily buses from Marrakech to Agadir, Essaouira, Goulimine, and Smara. Most of the passengers who take these buses are visitors, not locals.

Supra Tours buses are direct, fast, and air conditioned. Buses book up in advance, so it is best to go to the office (near the train station on Avenue Hassan II) to book the day before you travel.

Supra Tours run the best buses from Marrakech to other Moroccan cities, and I highly recommend them if you are traveling by bus in Morocco.

CTM Bus Company in Marrakech

CTM bus company is the state bus company in Marrakech. CTM has buses from Marrakech to Agadir, Casablanca, Fes, Goulimine, Ouarzazate, Rabat, Taroudannt, and Zagora. Most of the passengers who take these buses are a combination of visitors and locals.

CTM buses are direct, fast, and air conditioned. Their office is in Gueliz.

Local Private Bus Companies in Marrakech

At the Bab Doukkala bus station there are bus companies that offer daily buses from Marrakech to cities like Agadir, Casablanca, Essaouira, Goulimine, and Tangier. Most of the passengers who take these buses are locals, not visitors.

The local private bus companies run cheap buses, but you get what you pay for. Buses are not air conditioned, make frequent stops, and often serve as the driver’s personal vehicle for running errands en route to the final destination.

Unless you are on a very tight budget, avoid the local private bus companies in Marrakech.

Baggage on Marrakech Buses

There is a surcharge of 5 Dh for every piece of baggage besides hand baggage.

Tall and visible from all over the city, the Koutoubia Minaret is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city.

Located a short distance from the Djemaa el Fna, the Koutoubia Minaret and adjacent gardens are well worth a visit.

The Koutoubia Minaret dates all the way back to the 12th century.

The minaret is a beautiful and well-preserved example of Moorish architecture in Morocco.

In addition to being an iconic symbol of Marrakech, the Koutoubia Minaret is a helpful landmark for orienting oneself.

It is especially helpful for those that get lost in the maze-like streets of the Marrakech souks.

While non-Muslim visitors are not allowed entrance into the mosque, the Koutoubia Minaret itself is worth seeing up close.

The most famous place in Marrakech is definitely the Djemaa el Fna, Marrakech’s main square.

The Djemaa el Fna is located at the heart of the city center.

It is wide and bustling with food vendors, snake charmers, restaurants, and visitors and locals alike.

Stop by the Djemaa el Fna during the day to try some fresh-squeezed orange juice and hone your bargaining skills.

Return at night to eat from the many market stalls selling grilled meat and vegetables.

Be aware that the Djemaa el Fna gets very crowded at night, so make sure to have a plan in case you get separated from your group.
