Lamu Bus Schedule
Buses from Mombasa to Lamu are operated by Falcon Bus.
They run from the Mombasa city centre to a port on the Kenyan coast, at which point you can board a motorized dhow for a 30 minute ferry to Lamu.
There are several buses a day from Mombasa to Lamu, all of which stop in Malindi and allow passengers to alight and stretch their legs. \
Buses are not supposed to stop elsewhere, but often do to let people on or off.
The road from Mombasa to Lamu is also in bad shape, and becomes a dirt road towards the end, so the bus ride is not very comfortable.
The bus also travels through territory that the government considers dangerous, so armed guards travel on a portion of the bus ride.
The total driving time from Mombasa to Lamu on the bus is supposed to be 6 hours, but usually ends up being at least 8 hours.
Some buses from Mombasa to Lamu take much longer, and it’s not unheard of for buses to take up to 13 hours. Buses from Mombasa to Lamu are generally old and in poor condition, and often break down or have to stop to repair a flat tire.
Tickets for buses can be purchased from the ticket office at the bus stop in Mombasa.
Because buses from Mombasa to Lamu are so unpredictable, it is advisable to take a flight from Mombasa, Nairobi, or Malindi to Lamu instead.
